According to the report, by 2035, 99.8% of new electric freight trucks will be cheaper to purchase and operate than diesel trucks while transporting the same weight of products over the same distance and travel time.
In most cases, electric trucks will outperform diesel trucks in terms of total cost of ownership sooner.
Making an extra stop, beyond what is legally needed, to charge can quickly bridge the slight difference to 100%. Even with that extra stop, they would be less expensive to acquire and operate.
“EU lawmakers may set a 2035 target to accomplish zero emissions sales with confidence that electric rigs will defeat diesel trucks every time,” stated Fedor Unterlohner. This would reduce haulier costs and improve transportation while allowing European truckmakers to maintain their worldwide leadership.”
However, an additional EU CO2 target of -65% for truckmakers in 2030 is also required if zero emissions freight vehicles are to reach nearly 100% of sales five years later, according to T&E. Maintaining existing EU climate standards for truck manufacturers will result in 1.3 million fewer zero-emission trucks on the road in 2035.
According to the study, electric freight trucks will go the same distance as their diesel counterparts. It discovers that practically all freight trucks in Europe travel less than 800km per day, which is within the range of the most recent battery electric vehicles when charged during legally mandated driver breaks.
Even the largest electric long-haul trucks will be able to transport the same weight of cargo as diesel trucks by 2030, thanks to the weight of the battery being offset by the removal of the engine and a 2-tonne allowance for zero-emission vehicles under EU laws.
