Europe’s battery industry thrives amid rising EV demand

The demand for lithium-ion batteries has surged as EV sales crossed the significant 10 million mark worldwide in 2022. This surge has sparked a flurry of activity in Europe's battery industry, as new production plants and factories spring up to meet the growing demand.

Driving the shift to electric mobility is the growing need for high-capacity batteries. In 2022, sales of batteries designed for EVs reached an impressive 690 GWh, marking a significant 76% increase from the previous year. Notably, market leaders such as CATL, LG Energy Solution, BYD, Panasonic, Samsung SDI, and SK On, though rooted in Asia, have expanded their operations to Europe, with four out of six establishing production facilities in the continent.

At the same time, the stationary battery storage sector experienced a remarkable surge, with global sales of 122 GWh in battery capacity in 2022, representing a striking 177% growth. This upward trend is expected to continue due to various government measures aimed at promoting renewable energy generation and storage.

Mapping Europe’s Battery Cell Production Landscape
