Even so, reaching more than 40 percent in a regular month such as October highlights that electric mobility has become structurally embedded in the Dutch car market rather than being driven only by year-end incentives.
Breakdown by Fuel Type (October 2025)
Hybrid: 16,198 registrations (46.6 percent)
Fully Electric (BEV): 13,968 registrations (40.2 percent)
Petrol: 4,209 registrations (12.1 percent)
Diesel: 188 registrations (0.5 percent)
LPG: 161 registrations (0.5 percent)
Key Market Drivers
A major factor behind the current surge is the upcoming change in company car taxation. From January 2026, the benefit in kind (“bijtelling”) rate for electric lease cars will increase from 17 to 22 percent, bringing it in line with petrol vehicles. This has led to a strong year end push as companies and drivers seek to register vehicles before the new rate applies.
Improved charging infrastructure, a growing range of affordable models and accelerated fleet electrification further reinforce this growth.
Top Five Best Selling Fully Electric Models
According to registration data for October 2025, the top performing BEV models were:
Škoda Elroq – 1,772 registrations (12.7 percent of BEV market)
Kia EV3 – 708 registrations (5.1 percent)
Tesla Model Y – 617 registrations (4.4 percent)
Volkswagen ID.3 – 509 registrations (3.6 percent)
Volkswagen ID.4 – 503 registrations (3.6 percent)
These results highlight the dominance of compact and mid size electric crossovers as Dutch buyers balance range, practicality and cost efficiency.
Outlook for 2026
For 2026, RAI Vereniging and BOVAG forecast around 361,000 new passenger car registrations, slightly below the 2025 projection of 367,000.
While overall volumes may stabilise, BEV adoption is expected to maintain a solid upward trajectory.
Short term fluctuations may occur as the higher “bijtelling” temporarily cools demand, yet structural growth will continue, supported by corporate sustainability targets, new model launches and improved affordability.
Overall, October’s figures confirm that the Netherlands remains one of Europe’s leading electric mobility markets, where BEVs are now firmly established as the mainstream choice.
