The Rise of Fast Chargers by +39%
Over the course of the past twelve months, Germany connected an impressive 28,300 additional public charging points to the grid, reflecting an annual growth of 23%. While the trend toward fast chargers continues to grow, the bulk of this expansion has been driven by AC charging points. Over the past year, the number of AC chargers increased from 101,638 to 120,618 units, a rise of approximately 19%. This makes AC chargers the backbone of Germany’s charging infrastructure.
At the same time, the number of fast chargers climbed from 24,095 to 33,419, showing a 39% increase. These fast chargers, essential for reducing charging times and supporting long-distance travel, now account for a substantial portion of the network, with high-power chargers (299 kW+) experiencing the fastest growth (+49%).
This progress ensures that long-distance EV travel across Germany becomes more convenient than ever, especially along major highways and transit routes.
German EV Charging Network Growth by Region 2024
Germany’s EV charging infrastructure expansion varies across its federal states. The leaders in total charging points are:
- Bavaria: 30.464 charging points
- North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW): 29.299 charging points
- Baden-Württemberg: 26.495 charging points
These regions account for a substantial portion of the country’s EV charging infrastructure. However, smaller states like Bremen (+41%), Hesse (+32%), and Berlin (+29%) recorded the highest growth rates over the year, showcasing efforts to catch up with larger regions.
Notably, Berlin now has 4,989 charging points, while Bremen has 1,078, reflecting a strong commitment to growth despite smaller populations.
Germany’s total charging capacity now stands at 5.72 GW, distributed across 120.618 AC charging points and 33.419 fast chargers.
Top 3 largest Charge Point Operators (CPOs) in Germany by Dec 1st
The expansion of Germany’s EV charging network is driven by a growing number of charging point operators (CPOs). In 2024, the number of operators surged from 8,186 in January to 11,362 by December, showcasing increased competition and innovation.
The top three CPOs are:
- EnBW mobility+: 8,392 charging points
- E.ON Drive: 4,277 charging points
- Tesla: 3,013 Superchargers
