Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilots are being conducted all around the world to investigate the benefits of V2G and prospective commercial models. A 2023 V2G service test is planned by Duke Energy Carolinas with 100 owners of Ford F-150 Lightning vehicles. Participants who agree to let Duke use the energy from their EVs will have to pay cheaper lease payments.
Submetering, which measures an EV’s energy usage separately from the owner’s primary utility metre, is permitted by the California Public Utilities Commission. This eliminates the need for pricey extra metres to benefit from EV time-of-use rates that are distinct from the total house account. Bi-directional charging consumers would therefore miss out on the chance to take advantage of effective EV-specific rates without submetering.
