Open Intercharge Protocol (OICP)

The Open Intercharge Protocol (OICP) is a standardised communication protocol that enables seamless interaction between electric vehicle (EV) charging networks and service providers, facilitating cross-network compatibility and roaming services. Developed by Hubject, a prominent e-mobility company, OICP allows different charging point operators (CPOs) and e-mobility service providers (EMSPs) to connect, exchange data, and provide users with broad access to charging stations across multiple networks.

OICP is designed to support interoperability in the EV charging ecosystem, meaning EV drivers can use one account or app to access a wide range of charging networks without needing multiple subscriptions. Through OICP, CPOs can share real-time information, such as the location, availability, and status of charging stations, with eMSPs. This allows EV drivers to find available chargers, check pricing, and start charging sessions regardless of the network operator. The protocol also supports critical backend functions, such as billing and authentication, ensuring that payments and user information are accurately handled across networks, making the charging experience convenient and unified.

The protocol’s open-access approach has been essential in promoting cross-network collaboration in the EV market, as it addresses key pain points like fragmentation and limited accessibility. By enabling a more interconnected charging infrastructure, OICP helps make EV charging as straightforward as refueling conventional vehicles, supporting faster EV adoption by reducing the barriers to finding and accessing charging stations. Furthermore, it enhances the scalability of charging networks by allowing CPOs and eMSPs to expand their services with minimal compatibility issues.

As the EV market grows, OICP’s role in standardising interactions among diverse charging networks is increasingly significant. Its adoption fosters a user-friendly and reliable charging network for EV drivers, while empowering CPOs and eMSPs to operate efficiently in a competitive and collaborative environment. Ultimately, OICP’s contributions to interoperability and cross-network access are paving the way for a seamless, interconnected EV charging landscape that better serves the needs of a growing global EV population.
