Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI)

The Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) is an open-source protocol designed to facilitate seamless communication and interoperability between different electric vehicle (EV) charging networks and service providers. It enables automated roaming, allowing EV drivers to charge their vehicles across various networks using a single interface.

OCPI addresses the need for a standardised method of communication between Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and e-Mobility Service Providers (eMSPs). By adopting OCPI, different EV charging networks can exchange crucial information, such as charging station locations, availability, pricing, and real-time session data. This interoperability is vital for enhancing the user experience, as it allows EV drivers to access and utilize charging stations across multiple networks without needing separate accounts or authentication methods.

The protocol’s flexibility allows it to be implemented in both bilateral (direct) and hub-based (centralised) configurations, making it adaptable to different network structures. 

OCPI’s open-source nature and management by the EVRoaming Foundation ensure that it remains accessible and free for all market participants, encouraging widespread adoption and innovation. By standardising the interactions between EV charging networks, OCPI not only simplifies the user experience but also promotes market growth by reducing the complexity and costs associated with integrating different systems.
