Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) refers to the capability of an electric vehicle (EV) to supply power from its battery directly to external electrical devices and appliances. This technology allows an EV to function as a mobile power source, providing electricity for various loads without requiring a bidirectional charger.

V2L technology transforms an EV into a versatile power provider by utilising the energy stored in its battery to power electrical devices. This is achieved through the vehicle’s onboard inverter, which converts the direct current (DC) from the battery into alternating current (AC) suitable for most household appliances and devices. Some vehicles come equipped with standard AC power outlets, while others use a special V2L adapter that connects to the EV’s charging port.

One of the primary advantages of V2L is its simplicity and ease of use. Unlike other bidirectional technologies, V2L does not require extensive infrastructure or complex installations. It can be used to power appliances during outdoor activities like camping, to provide emergency power during outages, or to charge other electric vehicles. For example, an EV with V2L capability can power tools at a construction site, provide electricity for outdoor events, or keep essential appliances running during a blackout.

V2L technology is particularly beneficial for its portability and convenience. It offers immediate and flexible power solutions in various scenarios, enhancing the utility of EVs beyond just transportation. This capability is seen in vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Ford F-150 Lightning, which feature built-in power outlets or adapters for V2L use.

Despite its advantages, the adoption of V2L technology faces some limitations. The amount of power available is dependent on the EV’s battery capacity and the efficiency of the inverter, which can limit the duration and scope of its usage. Additionally, not all EVs are equipped with V2L functionality, though this is expected to change as more manufacturers incorporate the technology.
